At my house, we eat spaghetti at least once a week. It’s a simple pantry meal that I know I can throw together with staples and I also know my family will devour it, happily. When I serve this dish, I usually get asked for the recipe. And it’s so stupid easy to throw together…it’s the kind of recipe I LOVE to share!
This is pretty much the exact recipe I grew up eating. My mom never bought the premade sauce. She always dug into the pantry and came out with a can of plain tomato sauce and a can of diced tomatoes. Ground beef, herbs, onion, garlic…sometimes just garlic powder if she didn’t have the fresh stuff.
I add mushrooms to mine…because my seven-year-old can’t get enough mushrooms. Is that the weirdest sentence, ever? It’s true. He loves mushrooms.
If you love cooking out of your pantry, you’ve got to check out the Cans Get You Cooking site. It’s all about using what you’ve got on hand and keeping a well stocked ‘cantry’. Having a great supply of canned goods is an awesome way to eat healthfully in a pinch. Canned tomatoes are canned at the peak of freshness and retain tons of natural goodness.
Serve this spaghetti sauce with noodles, spiralized zucchini or spaghetti squash. Or my new current fave, polenta. Try it…and thank me.
