Since my son has started Kindergarten, I’ve become all the more aware of nut allergies and sensitivities. So many kids are allergic to tree nuts. It’s scary, and it’s also sad that they don’t get to enjoy delicious things like Nutella!
I’ve been using a lot of sunflower butter lately, in smoothies or just spread on apples, and got to thinking that I could easily make my own sunflower butter in a food processor…and then I thought about NUTELLA.
I can make my own nut free Nutella!
I looked up a few recipes and decided I would not only try to make this sans nuts, but also with a little less sugar. So, instead of traditional white sugar, I sweetened this delicious spread with pitted dates and some raw honey.
Please note, if you want to make this totally nut free, you’d have to use vegetable oil and a nut free milk substitute (or just plain old skim milk). Some with very severe allergies are also allergic to coconuts, which are technically a tree nut.
This makes a wonderful afterschool treat, spread on apple slices or with strawberries. Serve it at breakfast on whole wheat toast or waffles with banana slices. Or, just eat it with a spoon. I don’t judge.
