Listen, I know plain, unflavored and unsweetened oatmeal is the way to go, and nine times out of 10 that’s what I make. But this morning I discovered a packet of brown sugar-cinnamon instant steel-cut oats in the back of the pantry (Quaker makes it). Knowing that a bowl of sweet oatmeal is basically a bowl of carbs, I added a protein slurry to the mix and wound up with something that tasted like a melted oatmeal cookie. Sweet and substantial!
Adding protein powder to oatmeal can get a little tricky — the powder has to go in at just the right time or you’ll end up with unappetizing lumps. I have found that if you heat the liquid then slowly whisk in the powder you’ll have a smoother consistency.Adding a little extra liquid is also important or you’ll end up with a bowl of cement.
I had some chai-flavored protein powder, which really added to the oatmeal cookie vibe with all its spicy warmth. If you don’t have chai or cinnamon protein powder, just add a little extra cinnamon and nutmeg. One thing I didn’t do was add raisins, which you are free to do. I did remember to add a tablespoon of chopped walnuts for a punch of crunch and healthy fats.
