I can’t even tell you how many nights I just want to reach for the phone and order take out. But the truth is, there are very few take out options that are healthy. Sodium, fat, MSG. You name it – and it’s just not worth it.
Honestly, there are so many take out dishes you can whip up at home, in very little time, for a fraction of the cost AND effect to your waistline.
For instance, this General Tso’s Chicken. A restuarant portion of deep fried General Tso’s Chicken can weigh in at a staggering 1300 calories and 60 grams of fat. Of course, restaurant portions tend to be huge, but let’s be honest…when you get a takeout order, are you super strict about portions? I’m not. At all. I find it much easier to stay in check if I prepare my food myself.
This General Tso’s Chicken is served with brown rice and comes in at a reasonable 485 calories INCLUDING the rice. It’s super delicious and satisfying but there’s no guilt. No sodium bloat.
You can stretch this dish even further by bulking up on the vegetables. And also? This makes for amazing leftovers, if you have any. When I make this, I can’t wait for lunch the next day.
So next time you find yourself reaching for the take out menu, do yourself a favor – whip up some General Tso’s Chicken and pocket the tip money!
