DIY Microwave Popcorn
Who doesn’t love popcorn? I mean, what’s not to love?
Well actually, since you asked, there is a LOT not to love.
Here’s the ingredient list for a popular organic brand, and the brand I used to buy:
INGREDIENTS: Organic Popcorn, Organic Palm Oil, Natural Butter Flavor, Salt, Annatto (for Color), Vitamin E (to Preserve Freshness).
Here’s the ingredient list from a popular light brand that most of you’ve probably bought at one time or another:
INGREDIENTS: {brand redacted} Gourmet Popping Corn, Palm Oil, Salt, Less Than 2% of Butter, Natural Flavor and Artificial Flavor, Color Added, Freshness Preserved by TBHQ and Citric Acid.
Here’s the ingredients list for my DIY Microwave Popcorn:
INGREDIENTS: Popcorn, olive oil. <—–That’s it!
This popcorn is not hard to make. It doesn’t really take much more time than the other stuff, AND you don’t have to worry about which side goes up. For real.
You will save so much money, you’ll be able to by that stand mixer you’ve been eyeballing, too. Well, almost.

Gather
Step by step
- Measure the popcorn kernels and oil and mix together in a small bowl.
- Pour contents of bowl into a paper lunch sack.
- Fold top of lunch sack over twice and dog ear the corners.
- Cook for about 2 minutes. Be sure to listen for the popping to slow down, so you don't burn it.
- You can season with salt or a salt free seasoning.
