Where I grew up in the Midwest figs were as foreign as escargot. There were few people who even knew what a fig was, let alone had eaten one. When I began to travel and encountered these foreign fruits I wasn’t sure what to think. Then I took a bite and realized what I had been missing my whole life.
Here, in North Africa (where I now live) there is an abundance of markets selling fresh fruit. The kind you have to eat within a day or two because otherwise it will spoil. Just this morning I picked up a variety of fruit to have as an afternoon snack. This fruit topping feels like a rich dessert without all the calories. Top your breakfast yogurt or a light angelfood cake for a sweet dessert. Or, if you’re like me, just eat it right out of a bowl!
