I begin nearly every morning with a smoothie. They are an amazing way to shove a whole bunch of healthy into one meal! My go to smoothie is usually made with cacao, banana, sunbutter and almond milk, but today I decided to mix it up a bit and I love this blackberry smoothie so much, I had to share!
You might think ‘berries and sunflower butter?’ Well, yeah, admittedly, it sounds a little weird. But with a dash of cinnamon and the nuttiness from the sunflower butter, it’s almost like drinking a slice of blackberry pie. Who can argue with liquid pie? YUM.
A few notes on sunbutter:
1) What the heck is sunflower butter? Sunflower butter is ground up sunflower seeds. It has the consistency of a nut butter, but none of the allergy stuff that tends to haunt the nut family.
2) What kind of sunflower butter do you use? I personally look for sunflower butter that is free of sugar. My favorite brands are Maranatha and Once Again. There are many other brands, but if you’re trying to cut down on refined sugar, make sure to check the ingredient list.
The calorie count on this is a wee bit high, but it’s so full of wonderful, nourishing stuff, that you can have just the smoothie for breakfast and you’ll feel full and energized until lunch. Especially if you add the chia seeds. Those bad boys are not only awesome for you, but they expand in your belly.
You could also throw in some ice and a tad bit more almond milk and make this two servings. I tend to thin it out a bit for my toddler. She loves a smoothie, but doesn’t love struggling to get it through the straw!
Happy smoothie making!
